Ana Lillebø, PhD

Dr. Ana Lillebø is the Scientific-Coordinator of CESAM - Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies and a Principal Researcher at the Department of Biology, University of Aveiro, Portugal. She holds a PhD in Biology, specialization in Ecology (2001) from University of Coimbra, Portugal. She is a well-established researcher in Coastal Ecosystems with contributions to over 100 peer-reviewed publications, with focus on: Coastal Ecosystems Ecological Status & Management; Applied Ecology & Nature-based solutions; Environmental Chemistry & Anthropogenic impacts; EU Policies & Ecosystem Services, in a trans-disciplinary context. She has coordinated and participated in national and international projects; has collaborated with DG JRC on the Common Implementation Framework of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, co-authoring the 2nd Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystem and their Services (MAES) report. She was also the main editor and co-author for the IWA book on Coastal Lagoons in Europe: Integrated Water Resource Strategies. She is the national contact point for Ria de Aveiro LTER site at the Portuguese E-Infrastructure for Information and Research on Biodiversity and at ILTER marine task force. She is a member of the Council of the Portuguese Centro Hydrographical Region (APA-ARHcentro); a member of the Council of the Department of Biology and the Director of the Postgraduate Master Degree in Marine Biology at University of Aveiro.

Nelson Abrantes, PhD

Dr. Nelson Abrantes is currently an assistant researcher at Department of Environment and CESAM. One of his main research interests are related with the impacts of wildfires on  aquatic systems. He has been participating and coordinating several projects related with  this thematic, with particular emphasis on the effects of post-fire contamination on aquatic ecosystems and human health

Peter C. Roebeling, PhD

Dr. Peter Roebeling is Assistant Researcher at the Department of Environment & Planning (DAO-UA) and integrated researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) of the University of Aveiro since 2008. He holds a PhD in Social Sciences from Wageningen University (Netherlands; 2003) and an MSc in Agriculture and Natural Environment (Wageningen University, Netherlands; 1995), and has about 20 years of international experience in the area of sustainable development – leading integrated research projects regarding strategic resource use planning and environmental management in the face of global change.

Dr. Rui Rocha area of research has focused greatly on the development and implementation of community-based aquaculture projects. He is conducting several projects that aim to develop and implement methodologies to increase the value of low-trophic level species to be used in a sustainable aquaculture system in place of overexploited and more common species.

Paula Quinteiro, PhD

Dr. Paula Sofia Quinteiro is a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Environment and Planning/CESAM at the University of Aveiro. She has a PhD in Environmental Sciences and Engineering, a master in Sustainable Energy Systems and a Degree in Chemical Engineering, from the University of Aveiro. During the last years, she has been developed their research in the field of life cycle thinking. In particular, she has been working on the development and application of methodology for the quantification of water footprint from a life cycle thinking perspective.

Maria Pavlaki, PhD

Dr. Maria Pavlaki is a researcher at the Department of Biology & CESAM, University of Aveiro specialised in aquatic ecotoxicology. She is currently collaborating within the international project WE-NEED, related to real-world water management problems and focusing in ecotoxicological aspects and exposure pathways of regulated and emerging contaminants using freshwater organisms.

Rui Rocha, PhD

The startup SEAentia aims to provide safe, sustainable and nutritious seafood by combining novel aquaculture engineering with scientific research. Its production methods will be fully transparent to everyone at all stages of the value chain. His main interests are focused in general aquaculture business and research, mainly related on fish. He conducted research in fish nutrition, physiology and metabolism.

Institution

The Center for Marine and Environmental Studies (CESAM) mission is to lead international research on environmental sciences. By encouraging research and innovation, it seeks the increment of the efficiency of terrestrial and aquatic resources towards a more competitive, resilient and sustainable economy. CESAM’s scientific competences are clearly in alignment with the collection of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations General Assembly.

The Department of Biology at the University of Aveiro has focused on the quality of teaching and of research for more than 40 years. The Department of Biology distinguishes itself by integrating its students in the current research topics through the realization and dissemination of diverse scientific activities.
